Saddle chair or office chair with backrest?

The basic principle when choosing the right office chair is that it should be easy enough to adjust the seating position whenever you need to - even in the middle of work. A good office chair can be recognised by its adjustability.

So, should you choose a saddle chair or an office chair with backrest? This is really a matter of taste and you can only find the right office chair for you by trial and error. However, if you want to be able to move easily while you work, a saddle chair is the way to go. It supports the natural human need for movement very well, as the saddle chair automatically activates the muscles of the sitter.

Features of a saddle chair

The idea of a saddle chair is that it allows the back of the sitter to remain in a natural position that is less stressful for the intervertebral discs, without the support of a backrest. The legs remain firmly on the ground and are in a more natural position than when sitting in a chair with a backrest.

Sitting in a saddle chair reduces knee strain and neck and shoulder tension and improves circulation to the lower limbs. The upright position of a saddle chair helps you breathe deeper and better. However, saddle chairs are easy to misuse and many people sit in them in a far from ergonomic way. A saddle chair should be sat with the heels on the ground. Only then will the chair adjust the position of the sitter. In addition, the elbow angle should be 90 degrees, so that in practice the arms are kept relaxed either on the elbow rests or on the table top.

As a rule of thumb, if you can kick and move easily while sitting in a saddle chair, the chair is usually adjusted to fit. A saddle chair is not designed for leaning against a table, but if you do, the sitting position is out of alignment.

If you choose a saddle chair, it requires a table of the right height to work. A saddle chair will not work properly at a table of normal height. When using a saddle chair, the height of the table is usually about 10-30 cm higher than a normal chair, depending on the height of the seated person.

At first, don't be alarmed by the possibility of sore bones or a sore back - both usually pass once you get used to the saddle chair and as long as you use it correctly. If you are new to sitting upright, your back may also be sore at first.
